Congenital dislocation of the hip (DDH) is a common problem found in infants. It occurs when the hip joint does not form normally, causing the head of the femur to shift out of place.
The cause may be genetic or a result of the fetus's position in the womb, especially in cases of breech birth. Signs of dislocation include difficulty moving the leg, a difference in leg length, or a "click" when moving the joint.
Early detection is always recommended immediately after birth, as doctors can detect the condition through manual examination or ultrasound.
Treatment in the early stages may be limited to the use of a special brace or splint to realign the joint. However, if diagnosis is delayed, the child may require surgical intervention to repair the dislocation.
Early diagnosis and ongoing follow-up are key to maintaining normal movement in the child and avoiding any future complications.
