The Difference Between Type 1 Diabetes – Type 2 Diabetes – Gestational Diabetes | Key Symptoms and How to Manage Them

Diabetes is considered one of the most widespread chronic diseases, but it is not limited to just one type. There are different types that vary in causes, symptoms, and treatment methods. Many people confuse Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes, so understanding the differences between them helps with early diagnosis, reducing complications, and improving blood sugar control.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Samar Mohamed El-Ramssisi stresses that Type 1 diabetes is completely different from Type 2 diabetes because it occurs when the immune system attacks the pancreatic cells responsible for producing insulin, leading to little or no insulin production.

Type 1 diabetes commonly appears in children and adolescents, but it can also affect adults. Patients usually need regular insulin treatment to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

  • Excessive thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Rapid weight loss

  • Constant fatigue

  • Blurred vision

  • Increased hunger

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Samar Mohamed El-Ramssisi confirms that Type 2 diabetes is the most common type among adults. It occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.

This type is often linked to factors such as:

  • Obesity and excess weight

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Unhealthy eating habits

  • Family history of diabetes

  • Aging

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

  • Frequent thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Slow wound healing

  • Fatigue and exhaustion

  • Blurred vision

  • Occasional numbness in the limbs

What is Gestational Diabetes?

Samar Mohamed El-Ramssisi stresses that gestational diabetes is a temporary rise in blood sugar levels during pregnancy due to hormonal changes that affect the body’s insulin response.

Gestational diabetes usually appears during the second or third trimester of pregnancy and may disappear after childbirth. However, it requires careful monitoring to protect both the mother and baby’s health.

Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes

In many cases, gestational diabetes does not cause obvious symptoms and is discovered through routine pregnancy tests. However, some women may experience:

  • Excessive thirst

  • Fatigue

  • Frequent urination

  • Increased appetite at times

Samar Mohamed El-Ramssisi also explains that neglecting gestational diabetes follow-up may lead to complications such as increased fetal weight or a higher risk of premature birth, so regular medical follow-up is essential.

What is the Difference Between Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes?

Samar Mohamed El-Ramssisi confirms that understanding the differences between diabetes types helps patients deal with each condition correctly and choose the appropriate treatment and follow-up plan.
